Learn how to nurture confidence in your teenager
Building a strong foundation of confidence
As adults, we have had enough life experiences to realize the importance of confidence and believing in our own abilities. We know that in order to feel successful at our jobs, or any endeavor we care about, we need to have a sense of self-worth that drives us to keep going.
There is no doubt that having confidence is essential to your teen’s success. It can help them make safe and informed decisions, face challenges, and set (and achieve) their goals.
There are many different ways you can work on your teen’s confidence.
I’m sure you can recall how insecure you felt during our teenage years
I can remember feeling awkward, unattractive, and embarrassed, even when I was surrounded by a group of my closest friends.
Many of the high school students I work with have avoided trying out for sports or being involved in clubs because they feel like they aren’t as talented or qualified as the other students. They also compare themselves to other teens and put a lot of pressure on themselves to live up to other people’s standards.
It can be exhausting!
Why building confidence is important for pre-teens and teenagers.
Confidence helps teenagers feel they can make safe, informed decisions and avoid people and situations that aren’t right for them.
If your teenager is confident, they’re also more likely to be assertive, positive, engaged, enthusiastic and persistent.
Teenagers with low confidence are less likely to join in activities, more likely to hold back in class, and might be more willing to give in to peer pressure. When a teenage child lacks confidence, they might expect to fail at things they try, or they might not try as hard when things get tricky.
Confidence is related to:
Self-esteem
Feeling good about yourself and feeling that you’re a worthwhile person
Resilience
Being able to bounce back from difficult experiences and cope in hard or stressful situations
Self compassion
Being kind to yourself when things don’t work out the way you hoped or planned.
If your teen feels good about themselves and also knows they can cope when things are hard or don’t go right, they’re likely to have more confidence to try new things and tackle difficult situations.
It’s a positive cycle!
